There is good evidence that women suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) may benefit from taking Calcium and Vitamin B6 or Agnus extracts to improve their symptoms. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a debilitating disorder and the author of this review found that although there was 62 products advocated for use in PMS, there were only 29 robust trials published involving 10 substances. The outcomes were good benefit for Agnus Castus in 4 trials, evening primrose oil seemed to show little benefit, Ginkgo showed an improvement in breast pain, and saffron appeared to benefit patients with depressive symptoms. While three studied trials for magnesium showed no benefit, two trials for calcium carbonate improved all PMS symptoms, inconclusive results were found with Vitamin B6. This overview was presented by Associate Professor John Eden at a recent meeting in Sydney at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Interest in this difficult area continues.
