This is a major procedure performed by a radiologist in which the blood supply to the fibroids in the uterus is obstructed with a view to the fibroids simply dying off. A recent statement from the R.C.O.G. recognizes the place of radiological embolization. There does not seem to be any reliable study comparing this technique with surgical removal of the fibroids (myomectomy). It is uncertain about the effect of either of these procedures on women’s fertility. Women should be aware of the small risk of hysterectomy after this procedure. Other treatment options for women with heavy periods associated with fibroids include endometrial ablation and other medical managements. This area needs further study.
