Studies suggest low and moderate drinking in early pregnancy has no adverse on children aged 5. A series of papers published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology show that alcohol consumption of between 1 and 8 drinks per week have no quantitative effects on I.Q., attention span, executive functions, such as pain, organisation and self-control in 5 year old children. However, drinking 9 or more drinks per week was associated with low attention span in 5 year olds. I think the lesson from this is that until we have further information, abstinence is the best policy.
