In IVF we can replace either one or two embryos. A recent study in February 2016 in Atlanta Georgia, confirms that sequential single embryo transfer, that is putting one embryo back followed by another frozen embryo in a later cycle, gives results at least as good as putting back two fresh embryos. The advantage in this is that the twin rate is lowered. Twin pregnancies unfortunately, have higher risks of prematurity, fetal anomalies and pre-eclampsia. For this reason I encourage all patients to attempt single embryo rather than double embryo transfers. This large study supports this approach.
