New guidelines have just been released by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Treating patients with multivitamins, beginning at one month before pregnancy reduces the risk of nausea and vomiting during early pregnancy. Doxylamine and Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxone) are heralded as the best first line treatments. Nausea and vomiting occurring after nine weeks should prompt investigations for other causes of nausea and vomiting, eg. gallstones or other gastrointestinal causes. Other medications which help include ginger and steroid medications. If vomiting is severe and dehydration occurs, hospitalisation may be needed, but fortunately this is a rare occurrence.
